Where it all started…
Trinity Fitness began in 2008 with a simple question:
“Can you help me?”
That question came from Wendy Palmisano, Jason Palmisano’s wife.
Meet the family who created Trinity Fitness. In 2008, Wendy, after dedicating a decade to raising their four beautiful children, approached her husband, Jason, for help in regaining her health.
It began in a small private garage in Indialantic, Florida. In the wee hours of the morning, Jason and Wendy began a journey to health. Anyone who knows Wendy Palmisano, knows she loves people — the more, the merrier. She quickly invited friends to join. Those friends invited more friends, and soon enough, dining room chairs were being used for box jumps, basketballs filled with sand for wall balls, and pull-up bars were mounted out on the side of the Palmisano house.
One morning, the issue of comparison arose. "Why is she losing more weight than I am? Why is he gaining more muscle mass?" In response, Jason ran inside, grabbed his Bible, and read aloud: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies." 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. He encouraged everyone not to compare their progress to others and began the session with a prayer. Thus, the first Trinity Fitness "devo" (devotion) was born. Today, every Trinity Fitness class begins with a short devo and prayer to set the tone and focus for the hour.
As the group grew, members offered to pay Jason for his time. He declined, wanting to continue his career as a public speaker and not let this new venture take over. Unbeknownst to him, one member hid a wooden birdhouse in the back of the garage, instructing others to slip cash into it whenever they felt led. One day, while cleaning out the garage, Jason found the birdhouse full of money. He was surprised but pleased — now he could purchase proper equipment! The dining chairs returned to the table with a few more scratches and one broken leg, replaced by new boxes and wall balls. Thus, the non-profit model idea was born. [During the early years of Trinity Fitness, all locations had birdhouses for people to leave their offerings. Jason began Trinity Fitness with a flexible giving model, relying on the community's generosity and faith.]
As God would have it, the group continued to grow in number, fitness, and spiritual enrichment. Eventually, neighbors called the police for noise ordinance violations (uh oh…). Jason and Wendy were cited for running a business out of their home, despite collecting no money from participants. The city asked this nameless organization to either shut down or move to a business property. It was a relief for the Palmisano family to no longer use their home as a temporary gym. Though they tried to shut it down, the community, deeply in love with the concept and one another, insisted: "We will all work together to cover the cost of rent for a facility. Please, just find us a place to gather." This morning fitness community had taken on a life of its own.
Jason and Wendy said YES! The first Trinity Fitness was born in Indialantic, Florida, named by its mother, Wendy.
